WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE ADOPTING A DACHSHUND OR A DOG

IMPORTANT TIPS

Some important tips to remember when settling your new dachshund into your home is that it takes Time, Patience, Love, Commitment and Money.
Did I mention Patience? : )
Remember dachshund are hounds so they need regular exercise to maintain their Weight and Sanity.

HEALTH

Know that they can get numerous health issues so make sure you can afford a hefty vet bill or better still get some pet insurance in place.
Having the time to be with them often as they can suffer separation anxiety and certainly as a rule, they do not like being left on their own for long periods of time. This will need to be worked on.

EXERCISE

When walking them you must keep them on a leash. You can use just a collar or a harness. If you want them to run off leash, then find a good enclosed small dog park. The reason is that can be spooked easily, or their “hound” instincts kick in and they will go after wildlife and get lost in the bush.

IS THE BREED RIGHT FOR MY FAMILY

A lot of dachshund just don’t get young kids especially ones that need adopting. So be mindful that many dachshunds are surrendered due to biting young children. Make sure that if you have young children that the breed is right for you.

TRAINING & REHAB

Some dachshund might even need a little bit of canine rehab to get them through any anxiety or other issues that might pop up.
If you talk to other dachshund owners, you might find that many have had issues with toilet training. Dachshund are notorious for not wanting to get their feet or belly wet when it rains so expect a puddle or two!
So before committing to adopting a dachshund decide if this is the right breed of dog for you and your family and lifestyle. Go meet up with other dachshund owners or join a group on Facebook and understand their quirks before committing.

EXPECT TO WAIT

Remember that Dachshund Rescue groups try and fit the right dachshund with your family, so it is not necessarily on a first come first serve basis.
